Flash, Flex & AIR Package Names

Monday, April 28th, 2008

flash = Flash Player & AIR
fl = Flash
mx = Flex & AIR
air = AIR

Make any sense? Explicit for new users? Does anyone know why the legacy mx is still around?

A while back I suggested the following, and it was brought up in conversation again the other day…

player = Flash Player
flash = Flash
flex = Flex
air = AIR

To be honest I thought the feature request would get quashed straight away, but it’s still there and open. Want to see package names cleaned up for future releases? It’s up to us!

An internal build error has occurred (switch statement)

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Whilst working today in Flex Builder we all did an update on SVN and all of a sudden we all had the same error…

An internal build error has occurred. Right-click for more information.

So off we went trying to find the problem as there wasn’t any other info on the error. We trawled through all sorts of options including hidden files trying to hunt down the problem to no avail. Turns out if you create switch statement with no body in Flex Builder this unhelpful error is displayed. To re-create all you need to do is:

[as]switch( true )

I hope this helps others find the route of this error quicker than we did, and I’ve logged a bug here. Please go vote!

Five3D for AS 3.0

Monday, April 14th, 2008

I got an email from Mathieu Badimon this morning:

The FIVe3D package has been ported in ActionScript 3.0. This new release is named version 2.0. Feel free to download it online at the following address:

The new package has the exact same functionalities as the previous package in ActionScript 2.0. Those who previously worked with FIVe3D will easily keep track of their work. A future version 2.1 will be released in the coming weeks and will feature new and original options. The online documentation will also be available online soon.

A “typography file” generator is now downloadable online for both the version 1.0 and 2.0 of the package. New examples with a downloadable source code will also be added to the gallery as well.

If you don’t know of Five3D, its an interactive vector based 3D engine. Definitely worth checking out and having in your toolbox!

That’s right, if you have a bug or want to see a new feature in the player you can now log it in Adobes bug tracking system and watch it’s progress.
