I got an email today from the Flashforward team announcing Flashforward2006 Seattle.

I had an absolute blast as Flashforward New York this year and i would highly recommend attending one of their events. Lynda and her team do a great job!

More info at the Flashforward2006 Seattle web site.

Looking at CSS

Monday, August 29th, 2005

I’ve been looking into a bit of CSS recently and have fund it to be quite clean. I think i could get along with it with a bit more work.

A List Apart and Particle Treen are 2 great sites with lots of info about CSS, and they both look great (especially A List Apart)!

and heres a list of cool, well designed xhtml/css sites (more…)

Rename MovieClips Command

Monday, August 29th, 2005

All you might be able to tell by now i’ve been trying to get into JSFL today. These commands were created as they would have been very useful to me last week (and the week coming as a matter of fact).

The ‘Rename MovieClips’ Command enables you to select a group of MovieClips in a single folder and reanem them all with a coma deliminated list eg. ‘clip 1,clip 2,clip 3,clip 4′. (more…)

Change Type Command

Sunday, August 28th, 2005

Another simple little JSFL extension. The other day i got a file with a shed load of Graphic’s in the library that i needed to change to MovieClip’s. This extension enables you to select items in your library and then change their type to either MovieClip, Button or Graphic.

Download here.

*** edit ***
I have just updated this extension so that it only affects MovieClip’s, Button’s and Graphic’s. All other items are now ignored.

I’ve admired these guys since they first presented a Three Minute Madness at BD4D. Now they have a slick new site!

Also whilst I’m mentioning BD4D, don’t forget their London event on 08/09/2005.

Draw Rectangle Command

Sunday, August 28th, 2005

I’ve been playing with MovieClip.scale9Grid a bit (its a fantastic addition and so easy to use) recently. A problem I came across, and have come across before in the past, is thats its very difficult to draw a rectaangle on the Stage at a specific size with a specific corner radius. (more…)

Cops wipe out car

Sunday, August 28th, 2005

It was about 2:30am Thursday morning when i was just thinking about getting my head down. I had to be up at 8:00am so it was pretty late. Just as i was thinking about shutting my machine down i heard a big screeeeetch followed by a bang and some cop sirens. I jumped up and looked outside and there was a cop car in the middle of the road and another car smashed into some fenching at the side of the road. Within a minute there must have been about 30 kids swarming around, then the cops started to roll in. (more…)

Goodbye Fscommand

Wednesday, August 24th, 2005

Out with the old and in with the new. Flash 8 introduces ExternalInterface object to enable Flash to communicate with its host. I always avoided Fscommand for the little communication i have had to do in the past from Flash to Javascript and always used getURL(). It worked but wasn’t the ideal solution.

Then recently we had the Flash / JavaScript Integration Kit which, as yet i’ve never had no need to use as yet, and no time to play with.

So soon we’ll have ExternalInterface. More powerful, stable, synchronous communication, supports more datatypes, and theres a great article here by Danny Patterson on how to implement it.

Fishes Don’t Like Light

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

This is re-hash of one of Keith Peters Bit-101 lab files (12/08/2005).

I loved the feel of the original file and with a bit of playing came up with this effect which gives the feel of the Fish moving away from a light source which follows the Mouse. It uses MovieClip.blendMode to create the light effect and a DropShadowFilter that is updated dynamically for each fish depending on its position from the Mouse.
